Detailed Scoliosis and Spinal Alignment Diagnostics
A scoliogram (or full-length spine X-ray) is a specialized radiographic study that captures the entire spine—from the base of the skull to the pelvis—in a single standing image. It is the primary tool used by orthopedic doctors and pediatricians to diagnose scoliosis, measure the degree of spinal curvature (Cobb angle), and monitor posture changes over time.
At LifeScan Clinic in Naxxar, our digital systems allow us to perform scoliograms with minimal radiation exposure, providing high-resolution skeletal details and rapid reports within 1 to 2 hours.
Spine Alignment
Cobb Angle & Curvature
We capture full standing views to evaluate:
- The Cobb angle (quantifying the lateral curvature of scoliosis)
- Spinal symmetry and pelvic tilt or leg length discrepancies
- Kyphosis or lordosis (forward/backward spinal curvatures)
- Vertebral growth plate maturity (Risser sign, in growing teenagers)
Scoliosis screening
Who Needs This X-ray?
Scoliograms are widely used to monitor spinal health in:
- Children and teenagers showing signs of uneven shoulders or hips
- Patients undergoing chiropractic, physical therapy, or bracing for scoliosis
- Adults with chronic back pain related to progressive spinal deformities
Scoliogram Preparation Guidelines
- Referral Required: A referral note from a pediatrician, GP, orthopedist, or physiotherapist is required to perform a scoliogram.
- Clothing: Wear clothing without metal snaps, buttons, zippers, or metal underwiring. You will need to remove metal jewelry, necklaces, or belts.
- Procedure: The child or adult must stand completely still for a few seconds during the standing exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about Scoliogram.
What is a Cobb angle?
The Cobb angle is the standard measurement used to determine the severity of scoliosis. A curve of 10 degrees or more is classified as scoliosis; curves between 10 and 24 degrees are mild, while larger curves may require treatment.
Why must the X-ray be done standing up?
Standing X-rays are essential because weight-bearing forces reveal the true alignment of the spine, pelvis, and hips under gravity, which is crucial for postural assessments.
Is the radiation dose high?
No. While it covers the entire spine, our modern digital radiography equipment uses highly sensitive sensors that capture high-fidelity skeletal details with minimal exposure.
