Definitive Bone Mineral Density and Osteoporosis checks

A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) bone density scan is the clinical gold standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD) and diagnosing osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a silent condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break. Because bone loss occurs without symptoms, screening is vital—especially for women during and after menopause.

At LifeScan Malta, we perform bone density scans using our advanced Stratos pencil-beam scanner in Naxxar. Every scan is reported same-day by our consultant radiologists.

Hip & Spine Scan

Targeted Density checks

We scan the areas most vulnerable to osteoporotic fractures:

  • Lumbar Spine: checking bone mineral density in the lower back vertebrae
  • Femoral Neck & Total Hip: checking the density of the hip joint
  • Forearm: scanned as an alternative site if hip or spine implants are present

T-Scores & Z-Scores

Understanding Results

Your radiologist-signed report will calculate key metrics:

  • T-score: comparing your bone density to a healthy young adult (normal, osteopenia, or osteoporosis)
  • Z-score: comparing your bone density to peers of your same age and gender
  • Fracture risk calculation to guide preventative treatment paths

Simple Preparation Instructions

  • No Calcium Supplements: Do not take calcium supplements or calcium-containing antacids (like Tums) on the morning of your scan. Undigested pills in the stomach can interfere with spine measurements.
  • Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal elements (zippers, snaps, metal buttons, or bra underwiring). A clinical gown is provided if needed.
  • Duration: The scan is painless, non-invasive, and takes only 8 to 10 minutes.
