Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about paediatric bone age checks, DEXA safety, and preparation.

What is a paediatric bone age assessment? +

A bone age assessment uses a single low-dose X-ray of the left hand and wrist to evaluate the growth and maturity of your child's bones. At LifeScan, this appointment is unique because it includes a clinical consultation with our consultant paediatric radiologist to review findings directly with you.

Is the DEXA scan safe for children? +

Yes, absolutely. Our DEXA scanner is specifically calibrated for paediatric bone density assessments starting as young as 4 years old (performed by specialist referral only). It utilizes the lowest radiation dose in Malta, which is less than a single day of natural background radiation, making it completely safe and gentle.

Do I need a doctor's referral for paediatric scans? +

It depends on the scan type. Paediatric ultrasound scans are accepted even without a doctor's referral. However, paediatric DEXA bone density scans are performed by specialist referral only. For bone age assessments, we accept self-referrals, but we always ensure reports can be sent to your pediatrician or GP.

How quickly are paediatric imaging results ready? +

The paediatric radiologist reviews the scan in real-time and will explain the findings to you immediately during your appointment. A detailed, formal written report is also emailed to you on the same day.
