Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about newborn screening scans and hip dysplasia.

What is newborn hip ultrasound screening? +

A newborn hip ultrasound is a quick, radiation-free scan used to check for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), a condition where the hip joint doesn't form properly. It is the gold standard screening method for infants.

When is the best time to perform newborn hip screening? +

Newborn hip screening is best performed between 4–6 weeks of age, and ideally always before 3 months. When there is clinical doubt, it is usually possible to perform the scan up to 6 months of age. However, the earlier it is done, the more successful conservative management is if any issues are detected.

What does the newborn anomaly screening cover? +

Newborn anomaly screening at LifeScan covers early ultrasound checks of the baby's hips, kidneys, bladder, spine, and brain (transfontanellar scan). It is designed to detect hidden conditions early so treatment can begin immediately.

Who performs and reports these baby scans? +

All paediatric and newborn ultrasound scans at LifeScan Naxxar are performed and reported in real-time by a consultant radiologist with specialized expertise in paediatric imaging, giving you immediate verbal results.
